All About deColourant

  • Before you begin any project, ALWAYS TEST FIRST !
Different materials will react differently to deColourant. Just because your fabric is black (or brown, or blue, or ...) makes no difference to what is actually underneath the color layer.
deColourant removes the surface color and reveals what is below. Different fabrics and dyes will decolour differently. Always test first to prevent unwelcome surprises.
  • Experiment using different amounts of heat. The more heat that is applied, the more deColourant is activated.
Add multiple instances of a design, and heat some more than others for a nice varied effect
  • Try layering designs. You can add multiple designs, multiple colors, and overlay them for some beautiful effects. Since deColourant does not activate until heat is applied, you can build your design until you are happy with it
  • deColourant does not have to be activated immediately. You can add your design, dry the deColourant (use a hand-held heat gun to dry) and put the item away for later heating. Waiting until the next day before activated deColourant will give you a more muted design
  • Similarly, apply deColourant, heat to dry but not activate, and let stay overnite. Then wash out the deColourant. What is left is a faint design in the fibers, like a watermark
  • To protect the sole of your iron from picking up wet deColourant, use a press cloth or paper towel
  • For more dramatic color changes, use steam in addition to heat.
  • Iron from the wrong side (bottom) to improve the amount of discharge that occurs
